Follow the bike from the street to its resting place
Walk the complete storage route with a tape measure. Record the narrowest doorway, the tightest turn, any steps and the final parking space. A floor rectangle alone can miss the difficult part: getting the handlebars around a corner or reaching a door while holding the bike.
Use the exact manufacturer dimensions, including the handlebar width and the bike’s configured weight. If you plan to remove the battery for handling, confirm that this is permitted and practical for that model. Keep the two weights labeled so a carrier calculation does not accidentally use the wrong one.
Write a fit record
| Place | Measurements or checks |
|---|---|
| Home access | Door width, turns, stairs, thresholds and your ability to walk the bike |
| Parking space | Bike length, handlebar width, stand position and space to get past it |
| Storage equipment | Rated load, tire and fender compatibility, mounting instructions and building permission |
| Vehicle | Receiver size, vehicle/hitch limits, bumper clearance and loading position |
| Carrier | Individual bike limit, total load, tire width, wheelbase and approved frame attachment |
A rack’s total capacity is not the only limit
The Thule EasyFold XT 903202 lists a 130 lb total load and a 65 lb maximum per bike. A 70 lb bike does not qualify merely because it is the only bicycle on the rack. Hollywood’s Sport Rider for Electric Bikes lists 80 lb per bike, with a 2-inch receiver requirement. Check the exact product and its instructions, not another model that looks similar.
Add the rack’s own weight when checking the vehicle and hitch requirements. A carrier that supports the bike still needs a compatible installation. Adapters, covers, trailers and unusual frames can introduce restrictions. Get the manufacturer’s answer for your specific combination before ordering.
Plan the loading task, too
Try the motion you will use, in a place where you can do so comfortably. Think about how you will hold the bicycle while tightening its attachments and where the second bike would go. If lifting is the obstacle, compare an approved loading aid or a different transport approach. A larger weight rating does not make a heavy bicycle easier to lift.
Keep charging separate from storage furniture
Follow the bicycle and battery manufacturer’s charging, temperature and inspection instructions. Do not improvise a charger or treat a storage cabinet as a charging solution without checking those requirements. Keep the route out of the room clear.
Buy the fit, then the convenience
Take the measurements to the shop or manufacturer and ask for a model-specific compatibility check. Save that response with your receipt. Only after the basic combination fits should you choose extras such as bags, covers or additional carrying attachments. Our carrier comparison gives two concrete examples of these trade-offs.
